MARLA AND HER SUPERSTARS

The Adidas Superstar was originally designed for basketballers due to its lightness and shell-toe. But this began to change in the 1980s when hip hop culture grew popular in America, where groups like Run-DMC were using the shoe as a staple to their attire. Since then the shoe has continued to evolve with association to different identities and collaborations.

Marla, a 20 year old bar tender from Southend living in Manchester, often wears her Superstars to raves. This is because she finds them comfortable and sturdy for standing in big crowds for a long period of time, as well as the versatility to match with various outfits. Marla discovered her love for raves when she attended the festival ‘Parklife’ in 2022, with the DJ Michael Bibi playing on stage. The visuals, lighting, and atmosphere had her hooked! She had never experienced anything like it back in her hometown, and since then her love has continued to grow rapidly… with a long list of events she desires to attend. The EDM community enhances her experience as she always creates new friendships in a non-judgemental environment.

In her free time Marla enjoys to cook, read, and have sleepovers with her girl friends - she feels it is healthy to have this balance in her lifestyle. She aims to grow her abilities in DJ’ing and knowledge of music, with a current goal to confidently produce and play for her friends and family.

CAMERON AND HIS SAMBAS

The Adidas Sambas are famously known for their history with football and pop culture in the 90s. These shoes were launched in the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, hence the Samba name, and have maintained their popularity ever since. Some may recognise these shoes as a Gallagher staple, from the Manchester band Oasis.

Other than the look of the shoe, the history of the shoe is what attracted Cameron the most to his purchase. He is a 24 year old living in East Yorkshire, currently working as a coach for the football team Leeds United. His passion for football began in his very early years of life, and he continues to excel towards his goals of working for highly successful teams. Cameron believes that the loyalty to a team enhances the entertainment of watching and following football, and he feels the highs and lows of it all… and it is always a great conversation starter! To separate his work and social life Cameron often meets his friends at the pub, as it is usually a laid back environment… unless the football is on tv. Living in the town Beverley there is always a pub close by, which is different to his childhood of growing up in multiple countries such as Singapore, UAE, and Malaysia. He is grateful for the knowledge of different cultures and friendships he had attained from living abroad, including the opportunity to meet Míchel Salgado and be a part of his Spanish Soccer School in Dubai.

MARCELLA AND HER GAZELLES

Venturing from the original design for indoor sports in 1966, the Adidas Gazelles are now an aesthetic item for any outfit. Their comfortability and wide range of colour ways makes them a wardrobe must-have.

Marcella, a 20 year old fashion student in Manchester, pairs her Gazelles with almost all of her outfits! This is because she aims to increase the life cycle of her clothing to minimise her impact on the climate. Alongside being a student in the cost of living crisis, she believes it is important to endorse in the second-hand market, as fashion is currently one of the biggest contributing factors towards global warming. Her love for vintage fashion has grown ever since moving to Manchester from a sea side town in Scotland, as there are so many more options of stores to browse. A passion for fashion greatly impacts this because she experiments styling old and new items to create outfits. Although Marcella enjoys a night out in Manchester, she has begun to prefer socialising with friends in café’s during the day more often. She feels as though she can truly catch up with them this way without the need to spend large amounts of money, and she feels the health benefits of doing so!
